Aitana Bonmati is expected to become the highest paid player in women’s football after agreeing a lucrative contract extension with Barcelona.
The 26-year-old Ballon d’Or winner has committed her future to the Catalan club, despite strong interest from Chelsea, who have inquired about her availability.
However, Bonmati has decided to continue her career in Spain, ending speculation about her long-term future. Her existing Barcelona deal was due to expire in 2025.
Her extension is a major boost for Barcelona, where she is seen as one of their most important players.
After a remarkable 2022-23 season, which saw her lead Barcelona to Champions League glory and win both the Ballon d’Or and The Best FIFA women’s player award, Bonmati continued her stellar form in 2023-24, securing another European title and a second . continental treble for the team.

At international level, Bonmati was a key figure in Spain’s 2023 Women’s World Cup triumph, winning the tournament’s golden ball as its best player, with three goals and two assists in Australia and New Zealand. She was capped on 65 occasions.
Earlier this week, Bonmati was nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award, along with several other Barcelona teammates including Patricia Guijarro, Caroline Graham Hansen, Salma Paralluelo, Alexia Putellas and Ewa Pajor.
Bonmati’s imminent renewal will follow Putellas’ contract extension in May. The 30-year-old has committed his future to Barcelona until 2026, with an option for a third year.
