Munich’s Allianz Arena will be the setting for one of the most interesting matches of the weekend as Bayern Munich host Bayer Leverkusen in a clash between the Bundesliga’s most successful team and the side that broke their streak of dominance.
Saturday’s game will be a top-flight clash, but even as the glow of last season’s record-breaking Bundesliga triumph still lingers for Leverkusen, it is Bayern who sit atop the table as the only perfect side in the league. Their winning streak will face their strongest challenge yet from Leverkusen, who have won three out of four in the league and are still looking. This match will also serve as a meeting of two young managers who hope to establish themselves as the best of their generation in the coming years – Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning boss Xabi Alonso and Bayern’s Vincent Kompany, who is weeks into his first a job at one of Europe’s top clubs.

Intrigues
Bayern Munich: After relegating last season for the first time in over a decade, things are so far so good for Bayern under new management. They have a whopping 31 goals in six games this season, 10 of them from goalscorer extraordinaire Harry Kane, conceding five times along the way. As much as it is a sign of Bayern’s intention to reverse last season’s course, however, the excessive goal difference also suggests that the team still faces a significant challenge to start the season. As a result, we know very little about Bayern’s mettle as they look to return to first place before the end of the season.
The good news is that not everything is a mystery in Munich. Kane remains as reliable as ever, while Jamal Musiala’s three goals and two assists suggest he will play a big part in their success this season. Olympic silver medalist Michael Olise is also a nice addition to the squad, already notching five goals and three assists of his own. That said, there are still question marks surrounding Kompany’s strategy – Bayern are still a bit more porous in defense than they need to be, keeping just two clean sheets this season so far.
Bayer Leverkusen: Although Leverkusen are only three points behind Bayern, their season is off to an extraordinary start. They have three wins from four in league play and have scored nine goals, but have also conceded 13 along the way. Outside of their explosive 4-0 win at Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League, the margins of victory and defeat tend to be narrow for Leverkusen this year, even when they win – look no further than their 4-3 win over Wolfsburg on Sunday and their 3-2 loss against RB Leipzig last month.
Fresh off his breakout season, Florian Wirtz continues to be in fine form with six goals and one assist while Victor Boniface is a frequent contributor in attack with four goals and one assist. They have the tools to break through a somewhat failing Bayern back line, but the question for them going into Saturday’s game is whether they can muster a strong defensive performance against a Bayern attack that is firing on all cylinders.
Prediction
It may not be in equal measure, but both teams are happy to score and concede in large numbers, so it looks like Saturday’s meeting in Munich could be a high-scoring affair. Alonso’s side also have enough talent to knock off Bayern for the first time this season, so the pair may share the points as one of the Bundesliga’s more fascinating title races in recent years gets under way.
