While the US men’s national team awaits news on the managerial front, their female boss remains unafraid to make waves. United States Women’s national team manager Emma Hayes spoke about the state of governance in global soccer. Hayes states that men’s teams are not ready for a female coach during an interview on Today’s program on BBC Radio.
“Of course [the men’s game isn’t ready to appoint female coaches]otherwise it would have happened by now,” Hayes said. “I’ve said it a million times – you can find a female doctor, a female lawyer, a female banker, but you can’t find a female coach working in the men’s game, leading men. It just shows you how much work there is to be done.”

Given her perspective on managing Chelsea’s women’s team, there is an interesting lens through which to look through Hayes’ comments. In her 12 years managing the Women’s side, the Men’s side employed 13 different managers including interim managers one of which was Frank Lampard twice. While credentials don’t mean everything in management, there are few managers in the world more accomplished than Hayes who won the Women’s Super Leauge seven times, the Women’s FA Cup five times, and also finished as the runner-up in the Women’s Champions Leauge. in the 2020-21 season.
If Hayes couldn’t watch the club she was at during that period, what needs to be done for a female coach to get that chance?
