Why the Vikings can cover
Minnesota has the best player on the field Sunday in wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Despite missing seven games last season, Jefferson still managed to surpass the 100-yard mark in five games and surpass 1,000 yards receiving (68-1074-5). Along with second-year wide receiver Jordan Addison (70-911-10 last year), Minnesota has one of the more feared wide receiver duos in the NFL.
What will be key for the Vikings is quarterback play, now led by free agent acquisition Sam Darnold. The former No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Darnold is looking to revitalize his career, especially with McCarthy for the season. He never played more than 13 games in a season nor topped 3,100 passing yards or 20 touchdowns through the air. If Minnesota wants to contend for the playoffs in 2024, Darnold will have to play near the level he showed in college at USC, which was among the best in the game. See which team to pick here.
Why the Giants can cover
Saquon Barkley is gone, which means New York starts over at running back with free agent signee Devin Singletary. Last year with Houston, Singletary rushed for 898 yards and four touchdowns and should be a solid stop for an organization that was seemingly surprised to lose its best offensive weapon. But quarterback Daniel Jones returns after missing most of 2023 with an injury and is looking to bring back the magic he showed two years ago in leading New York to a playoff berth.
In 2022, Jones played in 16 regular season games, throwing for 3,205 yards and 15 scores, with seven more touchdowns on the ground. Last season, the former No. 6 overall pick was healthy for six games, throwing two touchdowns with six interceptions. This is a big year for him as another poor showing will likely force the Giants to move on. Jones finally has a big-time wide receiver in his arsenal: LSU’s Malik Nabers was drafted as the No. 6 pick in April’s draft and should be targeted early and often in New York’s offense.
